Here is something like a FAQ.
Why? I mean there are already dozens of note taking apps.
I'm an inveterate note taker. But nothing worked the my brain does, so I made this for myself, and am sharing it with you.
No seriously, why shouldn't I just use the Notes app or Bear or Obsidian or Craft or [insert your favorite app here].
You absolutely should! Go for it! If you want to use one of those, you should! If you want folders, or a three-pane layout, or support for tables and images and PDFs, or checklists, or a robust plugin ecosystem then go use one of those! Go nuts! This app isn't for you.
Wait, no images?
Nope. No images. Stash App is a place to stash your notes, not your images. Yes, pedants, your definition of notes may be "a document with images." I don't want images in my notes. So I didn't build them into this app.
So what is this designed for?
It's designed to help you take quick notes throughout the day, tag them if you want, and save them with a timestamp. It's not designed for long form writing; it's more like a log of what you've been up to and things you need to remember. Done with something? Archive it. Want to never see it again? Trash it.
Do you support Markdown at least?
Yes. Stash supports just the perfect amount of Markdown for what Stash is good for. Headings, links, bulleted lists, blockquotes. If you're asking this question you know how to format those things in Markdown. Go nuts.
How does sync work?
Stash App uses iCloud via CloudKit. Your notes sync automatically between your Mac and your iPhone when they're signed into the same iCloud account. No set up required, it just does its thing.
Can I make notes when I'm on a plane? Or out at sea? Or underground?
Yes, even when you don't have cell coverage. All your data is stored locally first. You can create, edit and browse notes without an internet connection, and will sync when you're back online and all is right in the world again.
What are #tags and @mentions?
Type #project or @alice in any note and Stash App will automatically extract them as links at the top of your note. In your notes view you can tap on them to quickly filter your notes to notes containing those #hashtags or @mentions. The app suggests existing tags as you type.
What's the deal with #todo and #done?
The hashtags #todo and #done get some special coloring in the app to make them visually distinct. Todos are special! So are things you've done. In the iOS app, you can long press on any note to mark it as a #todo, mark one with #todo as #done, or reopan a note with #done as a #todo.
Wait so is this a todo app?
No, silly. Use
Things 3 for that. Seriously. But sometimes when you're capturing a note, you'll think of something #todo! At least I do.
Can I archive my notes?
Yep. Just hit e in the Mac app (or use Notes > Archive Entry), or swipe right in the iOS app. View archived notes by tapping on the filter icon in the iOS app, or the View menu in the Mac app. You can also "unarchive" notes. Don't worry, you'll figure it out.
Can I delete notes? Can I restore deleted notes?
Yes. Just hit # in the Mac app (or use Notes > Delete Entry), or swipe left in the iOS app. View trashed notes by tapping the filter icon in the iOS app, or the View menu in the Mac app (seeing a pattern here?). Deleted notes go to Trash first. You can restore them anytime. In the Mac app you can permanently delete your Trash, and they're poof gone forever.
Is my data private? I need to stash some pretty top secret shit. Can you read my notes?
Your notes are stored in your personal iCloud account with Apple's end-to-end encryption. We don't have servers, analytics, or access to your data. It's just you, your shiny devices, and your iCloud account.
Can I import or export my notes?
Yes. The Mac app has a very handy export feature. When you choose File > Export... any notes in your current view are saved to your computer as a Markdown file, with a title as an H1 (#) and your date headers as H2s (##). The Mac app also supports importing your notes using the same format. The app will parse dates, tags and mentions automatically --
here's the doc about our import format.
What are the keyboard shortcuts?
These are all on Mac: c> to create. j to navigate down your list, k to navigate up. e to archive a note, # to send it to the trash. enter/return to edit, ⌘+enter to save.
What platforms are supported?
macOS 14+ (Sonoma) and iOS 17+. Both apps are currently in TestFlight beta. To be fair, I've only tested them on macOS 26 and iOS 26. If you see bugs, file them through Testflight.
How do I report a bug or request a feature?
Email me or use TestFlight's built-in bug & crash reporting features.
